A creative solo project for viola with loop and pitch shift pedals.

Margrit has created a solo programme for viola with looper and pitch shifter in which she develops and transforms a wide range of material by some of her favourite composers such as Bill Frisell and Maurice Ravel, as well as exploring the bluegrass tradition.

The material that forms the basis of this project comes from different musical traditions, however there are common qualities that attracted Margrit to work on these particular themes; lyrical melodies, rhythmic drive, modal and folk music harmony.

Each piece starts with one line only, as all the loops are recorded live. The first layer can be a melody, an accompaniment or also a very short repeating pattern or riff. The music unfolds by the layering of several parts, some of which are improvised. In addition the pitch shifter pedal allows her to play in different registers or in parallel lines. Other string techniques such as pizzicato and harmonics add more possibilities, enabling Margrit to create a rich and varied sound world.
